Stargazing in the Andes
Did you know Chile is considered the world’s capital of astrotourism? With some of the clearest skies on Earth, it’s the perfect place to witness the wonders of the universe—no spaceship required!
Join us on an unforgettable Stargazing Tour in the Andes, just two hours north of Santiago. This special experience takes place at a private, self-built observatory tucked into the mountains, far from city lights. With over 260 clear nights a year and deep, dark skies, it’s ideal for stargazing—even with the naked eye!
What to Expect on Your Stargazing Tour
Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Santiago to the observatory, where you’ll be welcomed with a traditional “once chilena”—Chile’s beloved evening tea, featuring homemade bread, cheeses, sweets, and other local treats.
After this cozy introduction, an expert astronomer will guide you through an evening of wonder. The tour begins with an exploration of Archaeoastronomy, the way ancient Andean cultures—like the Mapuche and Inca—interpreted the stars. This region, part of the ancient Inca Trail and filled with petroglyphs, offers a powerful context for connecting with the skies above.
Then, you’ll ascend the observatory tower, designed to align with celestial events, where the experience continues:
- Learn to observe the negative spaces of the Milky Way, sacred in many ancient traditions.
- Use high-powered telescopes to explore planets, nebulae, star clusters, and constellations.
- Understand how modern astronomy connects with ancient wisdom—and how every night offers a new view of the cosmos.
Every tour is unique, based on the season and the night sky’s current display.
